Clicking on the speaker icon brings up the applet (shown above) and clicking on "Volume Control" will open the volume control dialog shown below.
It seems that the initial settings of the new volume control are soft and you may have to go into the Preferences and select PCM and Master (individually) and turn them up all the way.
Any applications that have currently active sound are listed and can be controlled individually.

Coool! The new mixer applet looks very nice, at last no more hassle involving gnome and pulseaudio...
Just one thing: PCM is not supposed to be 100%, by doing so things will sound like the speakers are broken or something =)
Yep. this is visible in alsamixer. Just put everything PCM related to 74% ( 0dB ) and don't touch it...
They should put the sliders for each application under the overall volume slider. That way, you can really quickly, easily and clearly control all relevant volume settings.
