- I have completely reloaded the machine with Ubuntu and Xubuntu Feisty Fawn and both behave the similarly. It must be something common to both.
- I have a PIII Latitude CPx laptop running the same Xubuntu install for weeks on end without any problem. It must be related to something specific to my setup on this PC.
- My PC will sometimes run for days on end without a problem and sometimes it will hang every few minutes.
- I have tried with Beryl and Compiz and without. I still get lockups. It seems less frequent when not on Beryl, but I can't be sure.
- When the system freezes, I can't ssh to the machine. So, the machine dies right down to the OS.
- It seemed to be worse when I had added applets to the panel, but I can't be sure.
- Searching the 'Net and forums seems to indicate a tendency to freeze with Nvidia cards.
- I have run memtest on the machine without finding a problem. Will try this again - sometimes bad memory can play these elusive games.
- I don't have any screensavers other than a blank screen. But it appears most often when the machine has gone to blank screen and never comes back out. But this could just be related to the duration of time that has elapsed.

Did you try to add to your grub boot options? I haven't crashed since adding this, but its hard to say because like you mentioned, it happens after a few days or after a few hours....
What I added:
noapic nolapic
From this thread:
