I did a fresh install of Feisty and this seems to have got rid of my system freezes. Yesterday, I added the weather applet to the top panel and the PC started freezing again. I removed the applet and it seemed to have fixed the problem. I have left the machine running while I'm at work to confirm this. If I can reproduce this, I better log a bug.
Thinking back, I now remember having added a few applets to the panel when my problems started. My current setup only has default applets and the Beryl ruby icon.
I scanned Launchpad, but didn't see anything similar.

Does your system have a wireless card in it? Apparently the Ralink drivers are causing all sorts of headaches for people (including me).
